Back to School for Thomas Jefferson University

03-17 012

Charles Matsinger Associates recently completed this 8 story renovation to the Martin Residence Hall at Thomas Jefferson University, located at 11th and Walnut streets in Philadelphia, PA. The university retained CMA to upgrade the student hub by giving it a modernized look and making the space more appealing to occupants. Student sleeping quarters, which occupy the majority of the building, were renovated to create both shared and single units with ample storage space.

Additionally, common areas for students and visitors including a kitchen, lower-level lounge, and study solarium, open up to exterior views and are day-lit by large windows. Bright floor and wall surface colors and patterns enliven public spaces and create a welcoming feel. The main entrance to the residence hall, formerly located on the western street façade of the building, was placed on the southeast corner elevation facing the university plaza. By completely redesigning the first floor plan, the entrance now embraces the public plaza side and completes the spatial parti created by the adjoining Scott and Hamilton Buildings.

Critical to the project’s success was the management of eight distinct project schedules within six years, coinciding with the University’s academic calendar. A measure of success is attributed to the cooperative efforts of the design and construction team: Thomas Jefferson University Housing and Residence Life and Facilities Design and Construction Departments, as well as the General Contractor, INTECH Construction.
